Fall is here – the perfect time to prune your garden plants and trees.
With the leaves falling and crisp air flowing, Fall indeed kicks in the best season for your garden makeovers. The chore for today, my friend, is pruning. Yes, those beloved plants and trees in your backyard are yearning for a fresh cut by now. You might be wondering, “Why prune?” Besides boosting plant health, pruning enhances the aesthetic value of your garden, allowing you to play sculptor with Mother Nature’s green clay. So, go ahead, grab your pruning shears, and let’s get started!
Larry’s One-Trip Move: Always prune above a bud, cutting at a 45-degree angle which helps shed water off the cut. The newly made cut should face outward, favouring outward growth in the next season.
Optimize your compost with this simple backyard biochar tutorial.
Sure, composting is great. But have you taken the leap into making biochar yet? Biochar is just a fancy name for wood that’s been slowly baked until it becomes soil-boosting charcoal. Biochar increases soil biodiversity, retains water, reduces soil acidity, and can even help offset greenhouse gas emissions. You can make it right at home with just spent garden materials and a steel drum.
Larry’s One-Trip Move: Burn the garden refuse in a steel drum until it turns into charcoal. Douse it with water to stop the process, let it dry, and then mix it into your compost.
Bring the movies to your backyard with this fun, easy project.
Ever thought of taking your family movie nights under the star-studded sky? Well, you can set up an outdoor cinema right there on your patio. All you need is a white sheet, some rope, a projector, comfy outdoor furniture, and popcorn, of course! As the cold days grow nearer, be sure to add blankets to keep everyone comfy on your outdoor movie nights.
Larry’s One-Trip Move: Make sure your sheet is as taut as possible for the best viewing experience. Using grommets to hook the sheet onto the rope can help with this.
Winter’s closing in – time to tune-up your furnace for those cozy, warm nights.
As the frosty season approaches, let’s make sure we’re prepared for it. Your papers may be in order, your car ready to ride the snowy trails, but what about your house? More accurately, your furnace? An annual furnace tune-up helps maintain its efficiency, reduces energy consumption, and most importantly, keeps your home cozy throughout winter. Pro tip – make sure to clean or replace the filter before you start up your furnace this winter!
Larry’s One-Trip Move: Remember to replace your furnace filter at least once every three months during the heating season.
Get to know our fabulous neighbors with their bountiful apple orchard.
Our dear neighbors, the Johnsons, have us all eagerly waiting for this time of the year – their annual Apple Picking event. Rows and rows of apple trees, smiling faces and laughter, kids and adults alike picking the reddest apples they can lay their hands on – it’s a sight to behold and a tradition to cherish! Don’t forget, the Apple Picking is scheduled this Saturday – a definite not-to-be-missed event!
Larry’s One-Trip Move: Remember to pick apples from the outside of the tree first, as they ripen the quickest!
So there you have it, folks – your daily digest of home and garden wisdom. Now remember, when you’re feeling overwhelmed with home projects, just remember: even Rome wasn’t built in a day. But I bet they worked every day.
“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.” — Larry
